Top Three Cadets

Battalion Commander Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Emma Espino- The Viking Battalion Commander is Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Emma Fernanda Espino. She was born to a Mexican family in Salem, OR on November, 25 1993. Emma is no 18 years old. She lives with her dad, Fernando Espino, mom, Emma Lopez, older brother, Omar Espino, younger brother, Ismael Espino, and her dog, Shadow. Even though most of her family is in Mexico, she constantly travels during the summer and winter breaks to visit them. She loves to play soccer, swim, and ride horses.

Emma has been in JROTC for the past three ears and this is her fourth year. In former years she has held the positions of team leader, squad leader, and the battalion Adjutant, or S-1. She participates in the Viking teams including drill team as the only returning fourth year team member, commander of Color Guard A, and unarmed Duals. This spring she traveled to Daytona Beach, Florida, to compete at the national level in Unarmed Duals. She also participated on the Physical Fitness team as a 2nd and 3rd year cadet. In her years as a cadet she has performed over 150 hours of community service.

Last year, before spring, the North Salem Battalion was in charge of the JROTC Cadet Learning Challene and Emma was awarded the position of assistant J1. She was in charge of grouping all the schools into companies and making alpha rosters. Her freshman year she was awarded the superior cadet. She has been awarded a scholarship that allowed her to participate in a youth leadership conference during the summer in Tacoma, Washington. This brought her great knowledge on how to lead her battalion better.

Battalion XO Cadet Major Aldo Granados-North Salem High School’s executive officer (XO) of JROTC is Aldo E Granados. Aldo’s family consists of nine people, his father, Dagoberto Granados, his mother, Maria Delgado, and his three brothers and three sisters. Aldo was born and raised in Harbor City, California and moved to Salem, Oregon with his family at the age of thirteen.

Aldo, of course, didn’t start off as the executive officer. In his first year of JROTC, Aldo started off as a cadet. During his second year, he was promoted to squad leader. Aldo then started off his third year as a platoon leader and later on in the year he was promoted to Bravo Company Commander. At the end of Aldo’s third year, the bravo company was awarded honor company for that year.

Not only is Aldo the executive officer of JROTC, he was in the armed drill team for two years, and enjoyed it a great deal. He was the squad leader in the armed drill team and obtained his own squad. Aldo’s job as the squad leader was to ensure his cadets were prepared from drill meets, making sure they had prior knowledge in order to pass inspections.

Aldo has been in the JROTC for three years and continues his fourth year as the executive officer (XO). As the executive officer, he makes sure every staff member accomplishes their duty in the correct manner and on time. He is also in charge of the staff of the battalion. Aldo works with the Battalion Commander, Emma Espino, in order to get the mission or project done that has been assigned to him.

Aldo continues to enjoy JROTC. While in the program, he has learned multiple skills and leadership qualities. he has also gained multiple friends, countless hours of community service and has earned various awards that help him focus on his learship skills, making sure to always keep them sharp. Aldo knows the qualities and skills he has gained in the JROTC program will help him in the future.

Command Sergeant Major Cadet/CSM Taylor Phelps- C/CSM Taylor Phelps was born in Springfield,Oregon and grew up inSalem, Oregon. She attended Englewood Elementary, Mary Eyre Elementary,Houck Middle School, and currently attends, and is a junior at, North Salem High School.Taylor is the daughter of Billy Phelps and Trina Meier, and is the oldest sibling of two brothers.

 Taylor has held many positions in the Viking Battalion. As a freshman, she held the position Squad Member. As a sophomore, she was given the position of Assistant Squad Leader and, soon after, was promoted to Cadet Staff Sergeant, serving as a Squad Leader of Bravo Company, 1st platoon, 1st squad. At the end of her sophomore year, she was promoted to Cadet Command Sergeant Major.

 Taylor joined the Viking Battalion air rifle team at the beginning of her sophomore year. Throughout the year, she received two silver medals (including one at the Championship Drill Meet) for her performance at the competitions. She will continue to shoot throughout her high school career. At the end of her freshman year,Taylor received multiple ribbons and two medals- the Superior Cadet medal for her work and efforts for the Battalion and the Bronze Military Excellence medal for her Military Excellence. By the end of her sophomore year, she received a collection of ribbons and one additional medal- a medal awarded by Congress for her leadership excellence.

 At the end of her sophomore year,Taylorsubmitted an application for a scholarship to attend the Northwest Youth Leadership Conference. She was awarded the scholarship at the JROTC awards ceremony and attended the conference inTacoma,Washington during the summer of 2011. She has dedicated over one-hundred fifty hours of community service through the Viking Battalion.Taylor is the Battalion Commander’s partner and the proud iron fist of the Battalion.
